☕ The Power of the Pause: Mary of Bethany and the "Better Part"

Sweet girl,

Do you ever feel like you’re running a race on a treadmill that won’t stop? Between school, sports, keeping up with the group chat, and trying to have a "perfect" aesthetic, it’s exhausting. The world tells us that to be a "successful woman," you have to be a multi-tasking machine—always doing, always achieving, and always busy.

But let’s look at a girl who broke the "busy" rule to do something revolutionary. Her name was Mary of Bethany.

The Mary Breakdown: Luke 10:38–42

Jesus was visiting Mary’s house. Her sister, Martha, was doing what the world expects: she was running around, cooking, cleaning, and probably stressing out about the centerpiece. But Mary? Mary sat. She sat at Jesus’ feet and just listened.

Martha got annoyed (sound familiar?) and asked Jesus to tell Mary to help. But Jesus said something that changed the game: "Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

1. Discernment is a Superpower

Kingdom femininity isn't about being "productive" for God; it’s about being present with God. Mary had the spiritual "EQ" to realize that when the King is in the room, the dishes can wait.

In your life, this looks like discernment. It’s knowing when to put your phone in another room, say "no" to a party, or skip a study session because your soul desperately needs to just sit with Jesus.

2. Confidence in "Not Doing"

It takes a massive amount of confidence to sit still when everyone else is working. Mary didn't feel the need to prove her worth by being "useful." She knew her worth was already settled just by being His.

You don't have to be the girl who does it all to be important. A daughter of the King knows that her most powerful position is sitting at His feet.

❤️ The Boundary Line: Guarding Your Peace

Mary had to set a boundary against her own sister’s expectations. Martha wanted Mary to be someone she wasn't in the moment.

Kingdom Femininity means having the courage to set boundaries on your time and your energy. You are allowed to say, "I can’t do that right now," or "I need some quiet time." Don't let the "Marthas" in your life (or in your own head) guilt-trip you into a lifestyle of stress. Protecting your peace is a priority, not a luxury.

🛡️ Mum Tips: Practicing the "Better Part"

  • The 15-Minute Sanctuary: Try to start your day with 15 minutes of "Mary Time." No phone, no homework, just you, a Bible, and your coffee/tea.

  • The "Busy" Audit: If you find yourself saying "I'm so busy" more than three times a week, it’s time to cut something out. Ask: Is this essential, or is this just noise?

  • The Social Media Fast: Once a week, try a "digital Sabbath." Put the phone away for a few hours. Remind yourself that the world keeps spinning even when you aren't "on."

💭 Reflection Questions

  1. Do I feel like I have to "do things" for God to be proud of me?

  2. What is one "Martha-task" in my life that is actually stealing my joy and my time with Jesus?

  3. How can I practice being more present this week?

A Final Word

Listen to me closely: the world will always have a list of things it wants you to be doing. It will try to convince you that to be a "virtuous woman" or a "successful girl," you have to be the busiest person in the room. It wants you to believe that your value is tied to your productivity.

But that is a lie.

Your worth is not found in your grades, your clean room, your perfectly curated feed, or how many people you helped today. You were "fearfully and wonderfully made" before you ever checked a single item off your to-do list.

When you choose to be like Mary—to stop, to listen, and to simply be with Jesus—you aren't being lazy. You are being brave. You are telling the world that its noise doesn't define you and that your identity is anchored in something much deeper than your "hustle."

"You are a human being, not a human doing. Your seat at His feet is already reserved; you don't have to earn it."

So, the next time you feel that "Martha-stress" rising up—the pressure to perform, to please everyone, and to be "perfect"—I want you to take a deep breath. Remember that the King of the universe doesn't want your chores; He wants your heart. You are enough exactly as you are, right there at His feet.
