Did God Really Say...? Breaking the Oldest Lie Ever Told

 My Dearest Daughters,

There's a question that has been whispered to every woman since the Garden of Eden, and most of us have never noticed it for what it is. It doesn't arrive as a loud attack on God. It arrives as a simple, subtle question: "Did God really say...?"

In Genesis 3, the serpent doesn't tell Eve that God doesn't exist. He doesn't boldly declare that God is bad. He simply places a question mark right over what God had already clearly spoken. And let me tell you, that is still his favorite move today.

Look closely at that ancient conversation, and you'll notice three distinct tactics at play. Once you see them, you will start recognizing them instantly in your own thought life:

  1. He questions God's Word. It doesn't start with a fierce denial; it starts with a gentle, eroding "Are you really sure about that?"

  2. He exaggerates the restriction. Notice what happens when Eve responds—she adds to God's instruction, telling the serpent that they couldn't even touch the tree. God never said that! The lie always makes obedience sound heavier, stricter, and more unreasonable than it actually is.

  3. He reframes obedience as loss. The serpent whispers, "Your eyes will be opened... you'll be like God." Underneath it all is the ultimate accusation: God is holding out on you. He is keeping something good from you.

The Whisper We Carry Today: That is the exact lie sitting underneath so much of the quiet weight we carry as women: the lingering suspicion that God (or life) is withholding something we deserve—whether it’s a relationship, a certain body image, a career milestone, or the effortless confidence someone else seems to possess. We don't usually say it out loud in polite company. We just live like it's true.

The Truth About God's Boundaries: Here is what I want you to sit with this week: God's Word is not a restriction against you—it is protection for you. The boundary in the garden wasn't there because God was stingy or mean. It was there because He loved them enough to protect them from a reality they weren't designed to handle.

🛡️ Mum Tips: Guarding Your Mind Against the Whisper

  • Catch the Question: The next time you find yourself doubting God’s goodness or questioning His commands, pause and recognize the voice. It's the same old script from the Garden: "Did God really say?"

  • Check the Rules: When obeying God feels heavy, burdensome, or unfair, ask yourself: Is God actually asking me to do this, or have I added my own heavy legalism to it? God's yoke is easy, and His burden is light.

  • Expose the Withholding Lie: If you catch yourself thinking that God is keeping good things from you, bring it into the light. Confess it, and replace it with Romans 8:32: He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

💭 Reflection Questions

  1. Where have you recently caught yourself thinking or hearing that old whisper: "Did God really say...?"

  2. Have you ever caught yourself making a boundary or a command from God sound bigger, harsher, or more unfair than it actually is?

  3. What is one area of your life where you have quietly believed the lie that God is withholding something good from you?

A Final Word

My lovely daughters, you do not have to fall for the oldest trick in the book. God is not holding out on you; He is holding onto you. Drop the heavy, self-made restrictions, reject the lie that He is keeping good things away, and step back into the freedom of His truth. You are fully loved, fully protected, and completely provided for.
