You Are More Than What Happened to You

My Dearest Daughters,

Most people know Mary Magdalene by one detail: seven demons. For centuries she was even wrongly assumed to have lived a life of prostitution, though Scripture never says that. But look closely at Luke 8:1–3 — her past takes up a single clause. The rest of the sentence is about who she became: a woman who followed Jesus and helped support His ministry out of her own means.

That order matters, daughters. Scripture doesn't dwell on what was wrong with her. It moves quickly into what she became part of.

Centuries earlier, God had already made a promise that explains why: "I have called you by name; you are mine" (Isaiah 43:1). Not "you are what happened to you." Just — you are Mine.

Where This Shows Up in Real Life

  • The woman who feels like her divorce is the first thing people think of when they hear her name.
  • The woman carrying a diagnosis, an addiction, or a mistake she's never told anyone about.
  • Anyone who assumes their hardest chapter is their headline.

🛡️ Mum Tips: Living Beyond Your "Seven Demons" Clause

  • Notice where Scripture puts the emphasis. Mary's past gets one sentence. Her calling gets the rest of the story. Let your own story follow that same proportion.
  • Let God's naming outweigh your history. Isaiah 43:1 doesn't ask what you've been through before declaring you His.
  • Say it plainly to yourself today: "I am more than what happened to me."

  1. What is the "seven demons" clause in your own story — the chapter you assume is your headline?
  2. How does it change things to know that Scripture mentions Mary's past once, and then moves forward?
  3. What would it look like this week to let God's naming of you outweigh your own history?

A Final Word

Daughters, whatever chapter you assume defines you, I want you to remember Mary. Her past was real, but it was never the whole story — and neither is yours.
