Topic: Dropping the Performance and Stepping Out of Hiding

My Dearest Daughters,

We’ve talked about the whisper in the Garden—the lie that God is holding out on you. But what happens after we buy into that lie? How do we handle the aftermath when we realize we’ve fallen for it?

The first thing human beings ever did with their shame was try to cover it themselves.

In Genesis 3, right after Adam and Eve believe the lie, four things happen in quick succession: she sees the fruit differently, she takes it, their eyes open—not to becoming "like God" as promised, but to their own exposure—and they sew fig leaves together to cover themselves.

It is the first "religious" act in human history, and it is still our default instinct today. When we feel exposed, inadequate, or broken, we cover ourselves. We don't use literal fig leaves anymore, but we reach for others:

• Performance: Needing to be the best so nobody sees your flaws.

• Perfectionism: Trying to keep everything looking flawless on the outside.

• Busyness & Achievement: Packing your schedule so tight you never have to sit with your own thoughts.

• People-Pleasing: Managing how you're perceived by everyone else instead of allowing yourself to actually be known.

The Problem with Fig Leaves: Here is what is so easy to miss in the story: The covering never worked. Fig leaves dry out, they wither, and they are certainly not built for the job of hiding a human heart.

And when God comes walking through the garden, He doesn't ask, "Where are you?" because He needs GPS coordinates. He already knows exactly where they are hiding. He asks because the question was never about geography—it was an invitation out of hiding.

That is still His question for you today. It is not an accusation; it is an invitation.

🛡️ Mum Tips: Trading Your Fig Leaves for Grace

• Identify Your Fig Leaf: When you feel insecure or stressed, what do you automatically reach for? Do you pull away and isolate? Do you over-work to prove your worth? Name your fig leaf so you can stop wearing it.

• Stop Performing for God: God is not grading your performance. He already knows every flaw, every mistake, and every fear you carry—and He loves you right through them. You don't need to impress Him; you just need to be honest with Him.

• Answer the Call: When you hear that gentle nudge in your spirit asking, "Where are you?" don't run deeper into the bushes. Step out into the light of His grace.

1. What is your personal version of a "fig leaf"—the habit, performance, or defense mechanism you reach for to cover your shame instead of bringing it honestly to God?

2. Where in your life might you be performing to keep people impressed, instead of allowing yourself to be genuinely known and loved?

3. If God asked you directly today, "Where are you?" what would your honest, unfiltered answer be?

A Final Word

My lovely daughters, the good news buried in this ancient story is the exact same good news we still anchor our lives to today: God's response to our hiding was never punishment first—it was pursuit. He came looking for them in the garden, and He comes looking for you, too. You don't have to sew together your own protection anymore. Let Him clothe you in His grace.
